1. Identify the Issue and Equipment
Ask whether the remote:
- Needs programming.
- Does not light up or respond.
- Lights up but does not control the equipment.
- Was lost.
- Was replaced with an incorrect model.
Confirm the DIRECTV receiver or client model and remote model. The remote model number is typically printed near the top left of the remote.
| Remote models | Equipment guidance |
|---|---|
| RC71 / RC73 | Genie series receivers and clients, including HR34 and newer and C41 and newer. |
| RC65 / RC66 | Standard HD DVRs and HD receivers. Confirm the specific receiver’s compatibility before ordering. |
Do not assume every DIRECTV remote is interchangeable. Include the required remote model in all Inventory requests and technician job notes.
2. Customer Needs Help Programming the Remote
Use the DIRECTV Remote Control Programming Guide and walk the customer through the instructions for their remote and equipment.
If the customer cannot safely participate, document the limitation and follow the service-visit process below.
3. Remote Does Not Light Up
Check the batteries
- Ask: “When you press SELECT, does a light appear at the top of the remote?”
- If no light appears, ask the customer to replace the batteries.
- Confirm the batteries are installed correctly, matching the positive (+) and negative (–) markings.
If the remote works after correcting the batteries
Confirm the customer can control the equipment. Document the resolution; no replacement or technician visit is needed.
Suggested wording:
“It looks like the issue was the battery placement. I’m glad the remote is working now! Is there anything else I can help you with?”
If the remote still does not light up
Proceed with a technician appointment under the applicable property and service-call procedure.
- Verify Smart Care coverage for A La Carte customers.
- Confirm applicable charges and required approvals.
- Record the remote and receiver models in the job notes.
4. Remote Lights Up but Does Not Work
The remote may need programming. Follow the DIRECTV Remote Control Programming Guide.
If programming does not resolve the issue, document the steps completed and follow the applicable replacement or technician process.
5. Customer Lost the Remote
Lost equipment is not covered by DIRECTV or Smartaira, including under Smart Care, according to the supplied internal guidance.
Offer a replacement through Inventory. Customers may also check Amazon, where pricing varies. Remind them to confirm compatibility before purchasing.
Confirm pricing before quoting
The supplied internal instructions contain conflicting prices:
| Guidance | Price stated |
|---|---|
| Earlier replacement guidance for California | $25 remote + $15 shipping = $40 |
| Lost-remote instructions | $25 including parts and shipping |
Confirm the applicable total with SSD or Inventory before quoting or charging the customer. Do not promise a fee waiver based on customer tenure.
If the customer declines
Document that the customer declined the replacement and may purchase through another retailer.
If the customer accepts
- Confirm the required remote model and complete shipping address.
- Create an internal Sonar ticket assigned to Inventory Group.
- Create a one-time transaction for DIRECTV Accessory / Remote Control, using the confirmed charge.
- Create an invoice dated today and set its due date to match the transaction.
- Process payment and document the payment reference.
- Add the Sonar Inventory ticket number to Freshdesk.
The supplied lost-remote procedure states delivery within 14 business days. Confirm that this estimate applies before communicating it; do not promise overnight shipping.
6. Customer Received the Incorrect Remote
Document:
- Receiver or client model.
- Remote model received.
- Remote model required.
- Original shipment or Inventory ticket.
- Confirmed shipping address.
Example: The customer has a Genie Mini and requires an RC71, but received an RC66. Specify RC71 in the replacement request.
Confirm with Inventory whether the incorrect remote must be returned and whether any additional charges apply before quoting or collecting another payment.
