Many routers broadcast two Wi-Fi networks: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Each one has its own strengths depending on how and where you’re using your device.
What’s the Difference?
2.4 GHz
Longer range (better for larger spaces or multiple rooms)
Better at passing through walls and obstacles
Slower speeds compared to 5 GHz
5 GHz
Faster speeds (great for streaming, gaming, and video calls)
Shorter range
May not perform as well through walls or at longer distances
Which Network Should I Choose?
Use 5 GHz if:
You are close to your router
You want faster speeds for streaming, gaming, or work
Use 2.4 GHz if:
You are farther away from your router
You are experiencing connection drops on 5 GHz
You are connecting smart home devices (many only support 2.4 GHz)
How Do I Know Which One I’m Connected To?
Check your Wi-Fi network name on your device:
Networks with “5G” or “5GHz” in the name = 5 GHz
Networks without it are usually 2.4 GHz
Quick Tip
If you're unsure, try both networks and see which one works best in your space. Performance can vary depending on your home layout and device.
